A box-model of carrying capacity of the Thau lagoon in the context of ecological status regulations and sustainable shellfish cultures ArchiMer
Pete, Romain; Guyondet, Thomas; Bec, Beatrice; Derolez, Valerie; Cesmat, Ludovic; Lagarde, Franck; Pouvreau, Stephane; Fiandrino, Annie; Richard, Marion.
The decrease of microbial and nutrient inputs from the watershed has long dominated lagoon ecosystem management objectives. Phytoplankton biomass and abundance have drastically decreased for more than a decade and Zostera meadow have gradually recovered, expressing lagoon ecosystem restoration such as Thau lagoon. Do the progressive achievement of the good ecological status of the Thau lagoon possibly threatens the shellfish industry in terms of production and oyster quality, by reducing the carrying capacity? To provide answers about the right balance to be achieved between conservation and exploitation, a new numerical tool was developed to help in decision-making. We hereby propose to incorporate a Dynamic Energy Budget type shellfish production model...

Associations between farming practices and disease mortality of Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in a Mediterranean lagoon ArchiMer
Pernet, Fabrice; Lagarde, Franck; Le Gall, Patrik; Roque D'Orbcastel, Emmanuelle.
We present the first large-scale, high-resolution spatial and temporal pattern of disease mortality caused by Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1) that has affected Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas in France every year since 2008, in relation to local farm use. Mortality was monitored in healthy oyster spat deployed at 106 locations in the Thau Mediterranean lagoon during the epizootic that occurred in spring 2011. We conducted a field survey of farming practices in the areas where the sentinel oysters were placed before the epizootic. We found that the risk of disease mortality in sentinel oysters was higher within the bivalve farming area than outside it, suggesting that the infection pressure is much higher in areas with intensive farming activity. The risk...

Bilan des connaissance et des enjeux relatifs aux ressources marines de l'estuaire de l'Odet ArchiMer
Billy, Stéphany; Peronnet, Isabelle.
The estuary of the Odet, which can be defined as a ria, is an integral part of SAGE, taken on by SIVALODET. This space was hardly studied and it seemed important to perform a full assessment of knowledge and issues relating to this ria's fragile and unstable ecosystem. This assessment must be performed according to several points of focus; it must first of all strive to retrace the history of the fisheries in the Odet, then make it possible to identify as clearly as possible the marine habitats that make up this site. With that, it must then bring to light the potential resources of the estuary and finally resituate the Odet in relation to the other Breton estuaries.

Droits à produire transférables : Le marché des concessions conchylicoles et ses effets non désirés ArchiMer
Mongruel, Remi; Perez Agundez, José A.; Girard, Sophie.
This paper sets out an historical analysis of the rights-based system applied to the French shellfish-farming sector and a study of the current operating way of this system. It addresses the issue of the distribution of production means within an industry whose two main characteristics are the familial exploitation model and the specific social objectives like jobs creation in some coastal areas. The shellfish farming rights-based system has evolved toward a transferable production-rights system. However, the spontaneous emergence of a market for production-rights in the context of a weak administrative intervention is likely to generate unintended effects, whose occurrence is tested using quantitative and qualitative data. The final discussion searches...

Factors influencing disease-induced mortality of Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Petton, Bruno; Boudry, Pierre; Alunno-bruscia, Marianne; Pernet, Fabrice.
Mortalities of oyster Crassostrea gigas seed associated with ostreid herpesvirus OsHV-1 μVar have been observed in many oyster-producing countries since 2008. The present study, comprised of 4 complementary experiments, aimed to identify factors associated with disease-induced oyster mortality in order to propose mitigation strategies. Our first experiment compared survival of oysters from natural spatfall with others sampled from nurseries, after thermal elevation in the laboratory from <14 to 21°C. A total of 60% of the tested wild seed batches (n = 51) were infected by OsHV-1, exhibited mortality and were able to transmit the disease to cohabited naïve oysters. Comparatively, only 1 out of the 32 tested batches sampled from nurseries presented...

Hanging culture of the winged pearl oyster Pteria colymbus (Röding), in different hydrographic conditions and culture methods Boletín de Investigaciones
Revilla,Jormil; Peñuela-Jiménez,José H.; Márquez,Adrián; Lodeiro,César; Saucedo,Pedro; Freites,Luis.
ABSTRACT The performance of the winged pearl oyster Pteria colymbus juveniles under suspended culture conditions was evaluate, including five culture methods and two seasons: upwelling and non-upwelling. Culture methods comprised enclosures confining the oysters: BTBC, BBO and BTO; and two other unconfined-oyster: OFOB and FNS. The initial shell height of the oysters ranged between 31-35 mm in both seasons. The increase in shell size and dry mass of soft tissues showed significant differences between seasons. Greatest growth occurred with the OFOB and FNS unconfined methods. The ANOVA II analysis showed significant differences between the variables obtained in both stations and culture methods. Principal Component Analysis showed that the interactions...

Hydrologie du bassin de Marennes- Oléron. Analyse de la base de données "RAZLEC" 1977- 1995 ArchiMer
Faury, Nicole; Razet, Daniel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Goulletquer, Philippe; Ratiskol, Jacqueline; Garnier, Jacqueline.
An hydrobiological monitoring survey has been carried out in the Bay of Marennes-Oléron since 1977. Five stations, distributed over the Bay, were sam pied twice a month. Spatial and temporal trends of the physical characteristics (i.e., seawater, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and suspended matter), nutrients (azote, nitrite, nitrate, silicate) and organic variables (chlorophyll a and pheopigments) were assessed by using a statistical time-series analysis mode\. It was used to distinguish seasonal variability from long term trends. Pluviometric data as weil as the Charente River fluxes were similary analyzed by the model. The seasonal variability showed an homogeneous pattern over the five stations for all parameters, but the site-dependent...

Influence of shellfish farming activities on nitrification, nitrate reduction to ammonium and denitrification at the water-sediment interface of the Thau lagoon, France ArchiMer
Gilbert, F; Souchu, Philippe; Bianchi, M; Bonin, P.
The seasonal patterns of nitrification, denitrification and dissimilatory ammonium production (DAP) rates were studied in the sediment of 2 stations in the Thau lagoon (south of France). The station ZA was located within the shellfish farming zone and the station B was the reference site. A marked effect of shellfish fanning on bacterial activities was observed. Spatial differences were associated with discrepancies in the organic content and the reduction state of sediments, i.e. highest reductive processes (denitrification and DAP) were noted in shellfish farming area, whereas the oxidative process (nitrification) was predominant outside the farming zone. At both stations, the DAP activity increased in September (autumn) concomitant with an increase of...

Interactions between a natural food web, shellfish farming and exotic species: The case of the Bay of Mont Saint Michel (France) ArchiMer
Arbach Leloup, F.; Desroy, Nicolas; Le Mao, Patrick; Pauly, D.; Le Pape, Olivier.
To ensure sustainable uses of the coastal zone, an integrated ecosystemic approach and ecosystem models are required to frame ecological processes and evaluate environmental impacts. Here, a mass-balance trophic (Ecopath) model of the Mont Saint Michel Bay (MSMB) was developed, to analyze the bay's functioning as an ecosystem. This bay, intensively exploited by fishing and for shellfish farming, is also suffering from the proliferation of the gastropod Crepidula fornicata, an exotic species. The MSMB model has 18 compartments, from the primary producers to top predators, and emphasizes the large biomass of filter feeders. The model identified the MSMB as a highly productive ecosystem controlled largely from the bottom-up, and strongly impacted by huge...

Deschamps, Gerard; Miossec, Dominique; Pannier, Thierry; Huet, Jerome; Lorance, Pascal.
These studies of halieutic ecology produced at the request of Electricité de France by the French Institute of Research for Exploitation of the Sea in the Normand Breton Gulf must constitute one of the elements making it possible to come to a conclusion or not on the feasibility of the tidal power plant construction project; these studies have three parts: The first part discusses halieutic zooplankton. In the first place, the main species that constitute the exploitable living resources are considered, observed from the first stages of their life, in the egg or at different larval stages preceding the juvenile state. Also of interest are certain holoplanktonic groups. The whole of these observations establishes the status of zooplanktonic populations...

Les apports de la génétique dans la filière ostréicole française ArchiMer
Lapegue, Sylvie; Renault, Tristan.
The most known and certainly the most important contribution of genetics to the oyster indus try is the development of the triploid cupped oyster. Released for the first time in the 1980s, the triploid oyster has triplets of  chromosomes instead of pairs. Currently, triploid oysters are obtained by crossing diploid and tetraploid oysters. These oysters are characterized by a near lack of milt in summer, which makes them generally popular with consumers, and by a faster growth, allowing a shorter production cycle. In parallel, the exploitation of natural resistance in the diversity of French oysters has been considered to improve the health of farmed populations which is a  major challenge for the sustainability of aquaculture farms. Currently, the...

Merchant ships discharging unwanted marine species in close proximity of a French aquaculture area: Risks involved ArchiMer
Masson, Daniel; Thomas, Gerard; Genauzeau, Sylvie; Le Moine, Olivier; Derrien, Annick.
The most important oyster farming area in Europe is in a close proximity of two medium size merchant ports. Cargo ships deballast in this area before loading, releasing unwanted or noxious marine species. During a sampling campaign aboard these arriving ships, we found in some ballast water samples a huge number of potentially toxic dinoflagellates and some potentially pathogenic bacteria. A model was applied to find the potential geographical spread of the discharged ballast water. This model predicts the water to reach highly vulnerable shellfish farmed areas in six to eight days.

Modeling economic vulnerability: As applied to microbiological contamination on the Thau Lagoon shellfish farming industry ArchiMer
Perez Agundez, José A.; Yimam, Eden; Raux, Pascal; Rey-valette, Helene; Girard, Sophie.
The economic impacts induced by the harmful effects of pollution or negative natural events are heterogeneous and depend on the event type and intensity, as well as the characteristic make-up of agents affected. This vulnerability analysis evaluates how each agent (or group of agents) is potentially affected by an external stress or event with respect to risk of exposure, sensitivity or intensity of subjection, and coping capacity of these agents in order to avoid or reduce its effects. Using a comparative formulation model, the aim of this paper is to quantifiably assess the vulnerability of shellfish farming linked to bacteriologic pollution. An analysis of the vulnerability concept and the construction of pertinent indicators are presented. The analysis...

Oyster Farming, Temperature, and Plankton Influence the Dynamics of Pathogenic Vibrios in the Thau Lagoon ArchiMer

Vibrio species have been associated with recurrent mass mortalities of juvenile oysters Crassostrea gigas threatening oyster farming worldwide. However, knowledge of the ecology of pathogens in affected oyster farming areas remains scarce. Specifically, there are no data regarding (i) the environmental reservoirs of Vibrio populations pathogenic to oysters, (ii) the environmental factors favoring their transmission, and (iii) the influence of oyster farming on the persistence of those pathogens. This knowledge gap limits our capacity to predict and mitigate disease occurrence. To address these issues, we monitored Vibrio species potentially pathogenic to C. gigas in 2013 and 2014 in the Thau Lagoon, a major oyster farming region in the coastal French...

Procédés de traitement de l'eau de mer en conchyliculture pour la sauvegarde et le maintien de la qualité des mollusques bivalves ArchiMer
Castaing, Jean-baptiste.
The aim of this work is the study of seawater filtration process to preserve commercial bivalves and main tain their quality during harmful algal blooms. The originality of this work is based on the study of rustic processes, capable of removing toxic microalgae from seawater. Two filtration processes have been studied, the immersed hollow fibres membranes and a sand filter. The origin and nature of fouling mechanisms have been identified in connection with the selectivity and energy consumption . Suspensions of toxic and nontoxic microalgae were reconstituted and then filtered through 10 kDa, 300 kDa and 0.2 µm membranes and a sand filter (mean grain diameter dg equal to 250-520 µm). Microfiltration membrane 0.2 µm has emerged as the most suitable for the...

Marine environment contamination can affect fishing and shellfish farming products (and shellfish in the first place), thus making them improper for human consumption, threatening public health and producer’s business. Analysis and health risk management are mandatory for consumer’s security and shellfish production survival. About microbial risk, monitoring shellfish production areas and several studies carried by LERPC laboratory give a good view of the microbial contamination impacting the Pertuis Charentais shellfish production area. On the other hand, State-Region Plan Contract (CPER) studies results from 2007 to 2013 are presented and discussed; additionally, the law-prescribed sanitary studies for professional on foot-fishing classification are...

Relations milieu-ressources : impact de la conchyliculture sur un environnement lagunaire méditerranéen (Thau) ArchiMer
Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Souchu, Philippe; Mazouni, N; Juge, Claude; Dagault, Francoise.
Shellfish farming leaves its mark on the environment in which it has developed, and the men who depend upon it. These changes have altogether balanced the lagoon cycle and have caused disastrous episodic events. Increased water c1arity caused by the uptake of particulate material by shellfish farming allows seagrass to grow in deeper areas of the lagoon (down to five metres). Shellfish farming nutrient transformations increase ecosystem productivity, even if the filtration pressure keeps phytoplankton biomass at a low leveI. Storage of phosphorus and nitrogen in animal tissue limits eutrophication in this ecosystem. Transfer of oysters from growout facilities increases animal and vegetal specific diversity. The presence of large amounts of shellfish allows...

Technological adaptation to harmful algal blooms : socioeconomic consequences for the shellfish farming sector in Bourgneuf Bay (France) ArchiMer
Perez Agundez, José A.; Raux, Pascal; Girard, Sophie; Mongruel, Remi.
The economic impacts of harmful algal blooms (HABs) on the shellfish farming sector depend on their frequency, duration and intensity. Safeguarding storage and accelerated detoxification are technical solutions that could mitigate the effects of these events. This article first analyzes the economic feasibility of the technological changes that can be adopted by the shellfish farming sector in France. It then examines their associated social impacts. Finally, an application is carried out on the Bourgneuf Bay production area. The economic analysis addresses three issues related to HABs: (1) the economic performance of the shellfish farms in Bourgneuf Bay, (2) the costs of these new technologies, and (3) the economic viability of such an investment. Results...

Testing the potential effects of shellfish farming on swimming activity and spatial distribution of sole (Solea solea) in a mesocosm ArchiMer
Laffargue, Pascal; Begout, Marie-laure; Lagardere, Francoise.
Restructuring coastal fish nursery habitats by extensive shellfish fanning in the French part of the Bay of Biscay could influence fish physiology and behaviour and affect the ecological performance of the species. The influence of oyster-trestle cultivation installations on sole (Solea solea) swimming behaviour was investigated using an experimental pond mesocosm. A pen was constructed with three interconnected zones (two with bags of live oysters or oyster shells on trestles, and one free zone). Water renewal depended on the tide. Environmental variables were recorded continuously (temperature, oxygen, pH, meteorological data), every 3-5 days (salinity, samples taken for water analysis and estimation of sedimentation rate) or intermittently...
